The power of a slow "no"

Hi there Reader,

Last week, I signed up for fall sports. "Yikes," I said. Like it had happened to me, rather than something I did.

That's not really an accident of phrasing. By the time fall registration lands in my inbox, I've made about 5162 micro decisions that day already — what to feed everyone, whether to reapply sunscreen (probably), whether to start that load of laundry or wait until tomorrow morning. By the time I get to "should we do fall ball?" there's nothing left to decide with. So I don't decide. I just start filling out the form.

Decision fatigue at it's absolute best (worst?). It doesn't feel like a decision at all — it feels like the path of least resistance, dressed up as a choice.

The frustrating part is that "no" is usually the thing I actually want to say. Not because fall sports are bad, or because I don't want my kids to have things they enjoy. But because I spent the last two emails telling you how hard it is to protect blank space in a calendar, and then turned around and filled a chunk of it myself, on autopilot, before I'd even asked whether we wanted it there.

So I'm reminding myself of the power of the pause. How valuable it is to take a beat between ask and answer, long enough to ask myself whether I'm saying yes because I want to, or because saying no felt like too much effort to defend.

It won't catch everything. I'll still say yes to things out of habit or depletion sometimes. But even one pause, applied a few times a season, creates a little more room for the blank spaces I keep saying I want.

If your calendar filled up this summer the same way mine did — not through big decisions, just through hundreds of tiny "sure, why nots" — you're probably tired in a very specific, very common way. The pause helps. So does knowing you're not the only one saying yes to things you don't actually have room for.

Yours in practicing the pause,
