So much for a slow re-entry

Hi Reader,

Today I sat down to do our quarterly calendar and added baseball for one kid and soccer for the other — two different sports, two different schedules, somehow both starting in the same week.

Summer (at least for us) hasn't even finished, and already fall wants an itemized commitment.

I've spent the last few weeks telling you about protecting slow — the pause before the yes, the nap that showed up uninvited, the pool day I never quite got. And now here comes the calendar's actual answer to all of that: practices, rosters, first-day photos, the whole machine clicking back on whether I'm ready or not.

Part of me is relieved. I like rhythm. I like knowing where everyone needs to be, not wondering what we should do today. There's still a little chaos every single day in summer, just with no shape to hold it.

But watching baseball and soccer go into the calendar felt like fall reaching backward and taking a bite out of a season that isn't even over yet. Weeks I haven't lived yet, already spoken for.

I don't think the answer is picking a side — loving structure or loving looseness. I think it's carrying a little of one into the other. Keeping one slow thing on purpose, even as the practice schedules take over everything else.

I don't know yet what that one thing will be for us this fall. I'm still figuring it out in real time, same as you probably are.

Yours in the messy in-between,

P.S. — If today's version of you is also staring down a calendar trying to figure out how to fit rhythm into all of it — not a rigid schedule, an actual rhythm — that's the whole idea behind Rhythm & Flow. It's $9.
